the big little kitchen  | Think Small, Live Large

About:

This site is dedicated to the idea that good design is not something that only happens in large spaces.  For much of my life I’ve lived in places like New York and San Francisco where homes and kitchens tend to be small and I know for a fact that size is not what makes a kitchen great.  As a writer, editor and kitchen designer I’ve also been in thousands of other people’s kitchens of all sizes and have learned that what really defines a great kitchen is the style, energy and artistry that go into it and, more importantly, the food, love and memories that come out of it.  This site is my way of distilling those experiences, personal and professional, into a reliable, go-to resource for ideas, inspiration and information for anyone who is committed to living large in small spaces.

Kitchens and their design are subjects to which I bring dumpsters full of experience — literally.  In my younger years (above left), I spent my time between writing gigs renovating lofts in Manhattan, as tough a design education as there is.  Then came a decade of writing for major design magazines like Elle Decor, Metropolis, House Beautiful and This Old House, to name just a few, while intermittently renovating a couple of old houses on the coast of Maine.  Next came stints as the editor-in-chief of two different national design magazines, House & Home and Home, both published by Hachette Media.  That was followed by a book, Kitchens for the Rest of Us, about not-so-big kitchens, from The Taunton Press.  One reviewer wrote, “If you’re planning a kitchen renovation, start with this book.”  For the past several years I’ve been both writing and designing, frequently working with people who want more from their (often small) kitchens.  I’m happy to be able to share what I’ve learned from all of this, from my mistakes (yes, there’ve been one or two) and from my successes, so that others may have more of the latter and fewer of the former.
